Title: Duped Pdf Double Lives, False Identities, and the Con Man I Almost Married
Abby Ellin was shocked to learn that her fiancé was leading a secret life. But as she soon discovered, the world is full of people who aren't what they seem.

From Abby Ellin's first date with the Commander, she was caught up in a whirlwind. Within six months he'd proposed, and they'd moved in together. But soon, his exotic stories of international espionage began to unravel. Finally, it all became clear: he was lying about who he was.

After leaving him and sharing her story, she was floored to find out that her experience was far from unique. People everywhere, many of them otherwise sharp-witted and self-aware, are being deceived by their loved ones every day.

In Duped, Abby Ellin studies the art and science of lying, talks to people who've had their worlds upended by duplicitous partners, and writes with great openness about her own mistakes. These remarkable stories reveal how often we encounter people whose lives beneath the surface are more improbable than we ever imagined.

Don't buy this book I found this book to be boring and a complete waste of time. Save your money and attention. Don't buy this book.Primarily anecdotes of liars and their victims, with little analysis Years ago, on a blind date, the young man and I discovered we had a mutual acquaintance. I'll call her Lucy, and she'd been a housemate of mine for about a year. "So sad about her husband and son and that car bomb," he said. "Why are you laughing? That's horrible." And it would have been horrible if true, but when I'd lived with her two years before, the only husband I'd heard about was the groom she said she'd ditched the night before the wedding after being caught in bed with two of the fourteen bridesmaids."Did she tell you about the kidney transplant? " I asked."No it was brain surgery," he said. "That steel plate sets off metal detectors."And so it was with interest I picked up Duped, hoping to find out what makes people like Lucy and Ellin's Commander tick. Abby Ellin writes in a breezy, self-deprecating style. (She'd have to - she almost married a guy who told her on their first date that he'd examined Osama Bin Laden at Gitmo and even the President didn't know he'd been captured. Super secret - shhhhhhhh.) With an extensive list of footnoted sources, Ellin has compiled a collection of dupers and dupees and quotes various psychologists on why some people like to lie.Maybe there's not one, but it bothered me a bit that Ellin seems to make little distinction between self-aggrandizing fabulists like the Commander and adulterers, embezzlers and fugitives. I get why people lie not to get caught at something, although the scale of deception in some of her anecdotes is truly mind-boggling. I wanted insights into the people who make up stuff just because. She's also more sympathetic to liars like eco-terrorist Peter Young and double agent Kim Philby than I would be. "Oh to have such loyalty to a cause greater than myself!" (p 56, ARC). She never once mentions the hundreds of people killed thanks to Philby's information. Later in the book she talks about the PTSD suffered by Bernie Madoff's victims, but couches it in terms of an emotional response to betrayal (many of them were "Jewish, like Madoff") rather than the shattering of their financial stability. Both of those omissions are books on their own, but the lack of acknowledgement rankled. The book touches briefly on people who lie about their gender or gender preferences, which leads to a discussion about blaming the dupe. There's a chapter on women liars, and the book wraps up with a look at the dubious usefulness of polygraphs. A few casual digs at Republicans and the Trump administration are scattered as humor and will ultimately date the book. Overall I'd been hoping for more psychology and fewer anecdotes.Think you can't be Duped. Think again. Abby Ellin tells such a riveting story of being duped, you won't be able to put her new book down. What I love is she doesn't blame and shame. When a woman is conned, everyone blames the victim. But Ellin doesn't. She tackles the trauma of being duped with empathy. This isn't just her story; she uses her reporting chops to tell other people's stories too, including that of double agent Kim Philby's treachery. I gobbled it up.

Alan's book is one of the best I have come across. It is not set in some crazy scholarly theory. Instead, it is relevant to how we can improve daily. Through many self-check opportunities, the reader is given ample to time to reflect on what has been said.In addition to the book being incredible, Alan lives his message daily. This is not just a compilation of buzz words that do not mean anything to him. He truly believes and practices what he preaches. I took time to process each chapter to absorb all the ideas. At first, I was skeptical because there are so many books that cover these topics, but I was blown away by this book. This book challenged my thinking, had me discussing topics with my family, and has provided me key teaching points to my youth teams.I also see many opportunities to weave these ideas when working with educators and administrators about how to get better. My Evernote file is loaded with notes. My pages are scribbled and highlighted with ideas. My brain is full. This book is a must read for 2019. I am not sure there will be too many other books that come close to helping the reader get focused on what matters to being successful in life. Anyone looking for new ways of understanding self-awareness, passion, discipline, failure, confidence, vision, culture, servant, character, belief, unselfishness, role clarity, communication, and cohesion needs to read this book.

Algorithms Illuminated Pdf

ISBN: 0999282905
Title: Algorithms Illuminated Pdf Part 1
Author: Tim Roughgarden
Published Date: 2017-09-27
Page: 218

Tim Roughgarden is a Professor of Computer Science and (by courtesy) Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, where he has taught and researched algorithms since 2004. This book is the first of a four-part series based on his online algorithms courses that have been running regularly since 2012.

Accessible, no-nonsense, and programming language-agnostic introduction to algorithms. Includes solutions to all quizzes and selected problems, and a series of YouTube videos by the author accompanies the book. Part 1 covers asymptotic analysis and big-O notation, divide-and-conquer algorithms and the master method, randomized algorithms, and several famous algorithms for sorting and selection.

Can’t wait for part 2 Like many people I’ve taken Tim’s algorithms course. It’s an excellent course so I bought the book sight unseen. I was a bit bummed to see no coverage of graph algorithms or dynamic programming. The book is listed in parts so that shouldn’t come as a surprise. If you’re looking for specific material be sure to check the table of contents to see that it will be covered.Overall, I can’t wait for more editions to be released. No answers to end-of-chapter problems I think that the book provides a great introduction to the topic, and I quite like how the author strikes the balance between theory and illustration of the concepts using concrete examples. That said, there is one major issue with this book -- the problems at the end of each chapter are essentially useless as there are no answers or even hints to verify that you have actually understood the topic. I find it particularly funny that the author calls these sections 'Test Your Understanding' and then does not provide the answers (what? :).To be fair, you could ask for a hint in the discussion forum of the book, e.g. "I'm thinking that I should do x,y,z to solve the problem. Am I right?", but you will never know the final answer. The reason for such a policy is that the author also has a Coursera class and uses problems from the book there. Downside: I guess you will have to pay for the certificate version of the class to know the answers to the problems. Upside: it is helpful to watch him present the material on Coursera and then double down by reading the book.In the end, I wish there was an explicit disclaimer about this situation. I hope that later issues of the book (and later books in the sequence) will have an independent set of problems.Solutions to the problems are not provided At the end of each chapter there is a comprehensive set of problems provided to help you verify that you understood the material. However unlike most books this one does not provide solutions for said problems. In investigating further on line, I found that The author purposefully omits the answers because the questions are the same as found in his coursera course. If the book was marketed as a companion to his coursea course, then that would be ok i suppose. However, the lack of solutions makes this book far less practical in my opinion. Would it have been so hard for the author to come up with the distinct problems for the book?Because of the ommission, I have to mark it down to two stars

The Defiant Child Free Pdf

Title: The Defiant Child Pdf A Parent's Guide to Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Author: Douglas Riley
Published Date: 1997-01-01
Page: 196

...offers specific suggestions on how parents can talk so kids will listen and techniques to implement when talking fails. (Newsday)...helps parents regain control of their children and their families. (The Washington Times)

A much-needed tool that parents of children with O.D.D. can use to identify the source of this turmoil and take back parental control. Dr. Douglas Riley teaches parents how to recognize the signs, understand the attitudes, and modify the behavior of their oppositional child.

Lots of insight, great parenting tips and you find out you are not alone. I have two adopted children who were in the foster care system. Sometimes it is hard to determine what is defiance and what is normal behavior for a child. They do need to exert independence and they do want to fit in with their peers, so for me, I bought this book to help me parent them. There are so many times I have wanted to laugh (and sometimes cry) because this book is spot on. It's not a fluffy book that says try this and try that. It has good examples of how children/teens act and very good recommendations on how to parent. It is a good book for any parent, but for me, my children do show signs of defiance and the book is helping my husband and I identify those things we can do to be strong parents for our kids. It identifies areas where parents disagree and stresses the importance of working together. After all kids are professionals at finding a crack that they can wedge into to get what they want. You won't be sorry for reading this book. This book is AMAZING and offers real suggestions and solutions that WORK! I cannot say enough good things about this book. I was going through some very rough times with my 14yo son, and was really at a loss for what to do with him. We nearly sent him away to boarding school because we just didn't know what to do. Reading this book... it was like Dr. Riley had already met with me and talked with me about my son. The example conversations in this book were almost word-for-word discussions we'd had and ridiculous statements my son had made. It was so comforting to know 1) we weren't the only ones going through this 2) there is a clinical diagnosis for his behavior (ODD) and 3) there were solutions and conversations we could immediately implement. We followed his suggestions and I can happily report that THEY WORK! Things are not always perfect, but with a teenager... they never will be. But there has been a marked improvement in both his behavior and how I and my husband react to his behavior which has changed the entire mood in our house for all of us. THANK YOU for this book!!!I would highly recommend this book This author gave me so much insight into what a child with this disorder is thinking. He also gives tons of strategies on how to deal with outbursts and rude behavior. I would highly recommend this book. Easy to read. Easy to understand. I continue to use this book as a reference.

Hey Jon Ronson, there's a new kid on your block. Watch out! First, I listened to this on audiobook and enjoyed the narrator immensely. And thank you, publisher, for releasing this as a CD, a format that has fallen out of favor. Digital is fine if you listen anywhere but I only listen in my car. Digital is a pain and dangerous there. But I digress...I'm a big fan of well-researched non-fiction books in which the author plays a key role in the journey, like Jon Ronson's work. I instantly fell for Abby Ellin's DUPED. Her riveting story is merely the springboard for a much deeper look at the subject of duplicity both large and seemingly small. I found myself re-listening to portions so I could accurately recall them to friends. This would be an excellent book club read.Primarily anecdotes of liars and their victims, with little analysis Years ago, on a blind date, the young man and I discovered we had a mutual acquaintance.
